Construction in Progress
The existing station is located to the western edge of the Central Waterfront zone, facing South Union Street. It comprised of a Victorian building at platform level with a ticket hall and concourse of a 1960’s design at street level. The street level element was partially vacant and did not reflect the importance of Dundee Station which lies on the main east coast railway line.
A replacement for the previous ticket hall and concourse is now under construction. The mixed use building will comprise a new concourse area, café facilities and hotel accommodation at upper levels with a small element of office space at first floor. The Sleeperz hotel chain has been identified as the operator of the hotel.
The 1960’s concourse building has now been demolished and construction of the replacement building is well underway. The proposed station and its surrounding context can also be viewed by downloading the Dundee Waterfront Interactive Tour App for iPad and Android
Exterior construction work: New car park/ cycle parking & drop off areas:
These images show the new station concourse area with the main doorframes now being installed. Work is continuing at the upper levels to form the hotel accommodation with bathroom units having now arrived on site, ventilation ducting being installed and internal walls being formed.
With the foundations now complete the construction of the steel frame is well underway: The building frame will be completed over the next four months. The canopy frame which links the main concourse to the platform building is already in place. The frame is being constructed in modules away from the site, which allows them to be constructed safely without disruption to the railway. These modules are then lifted into place using two 600-tonne capacity cranes during the night when the railway is closed to trains. A video showing the frame being lifted into place is available.
The steel frame for the new station building arrived during August. Work on the foundations are complete and the erection of the steel frame has now begun.
(May 2016) In the early hours of Wednesday 25 May the first two sets of structural beams were laid above the main East Coast Rail line. This work was undertaken overnight between 01:30hrs and 05:30hrs to avoid disruption to train services.
