YOYO GAMES EXPANDS INTO DUNDEE WATERFRONT

22 Apr 2013

YoYo Games, the fast-growing cross-platform games development technology company plans to double the size of its team and allow for further growth by expanding into new offices on the top floor of DundeeOne development in the heart of the Dundee Waterfront regeneration area.

YoYo Games currently employs 25 staff but is planning to create an additional 25 new jobs in areas such as systems development, software engineering, sales and customer service.   The company was founded by a group of leading games and entertainment industry executives in 2007, and is the home of GameMaker: Studio, the world’s most widely used mobile and web games development technology.

The company established its European headquarters in Dundee in May 2010 by opening an office within Abertay University with two team members. The business focuses on helping developers create games that can be played on multiple devices (phones, tablets and computers) quickly and easily, substantially reducing the cost of games development. The company sells GameMaker: Studio directly from its web site and also through distribution partners like Steam and Amazon.  YoYo Games also creates and publishes games created in-house to demonstrate the functionality and potential of GameMaker: Studio.

Since then the business has grown rapidly and has now taken a ten year lease on 8,700 sq feet of prime office space in DundeeOne, Unicorn Property Group’s prominent new Grade A office development at City Quay on the banks of the River Tay.   Developed by Unicorn Property Group, DundeeOne provides 50,000 sq ft of flexible open plan office space over five floors with an ‘Excellent’ BREEAM rating.  The development was completed in 2010 and has already attracted MacRoberts, one of Scotland’s leading law firms, and SeaRoc, the Danish Offshore Renewables consultant.

Sandy Duncan, YoYo Games CEO said: “The business is growing rapidly and we need top quality flexible office space that will reflect the scale of our ambitions whilst providing our staff with an environment in which they can continue to do great work.  We are delighted with Dundee - the quality of staff coming out of the universities and colleges is outstanding and has been core to our success. This move into Dundee Waterfront and the DundeeOne building will allow us to accelerate our growth plans and hopefully create further high quality employment opportunities.”

Mike Galloway, Dundee City Development Director said: “YoYo Games is an outstanding example of the entrepreneurial technology-led businesses that are flourishing in Dundee.  We are very pleased that the company is doing so well, and pleased that they have chosen to locate in the Waterfront Area.”

Tim Allan, Chief Executive of Unicorn Property Group added: “We are delighted YoYo Games has chosen to locate in DundeeOne.  The offices will allow the business to grow and will be a key asset to the company as it seeks to attract and retain top games technology talent in Dundee. It is the first single floor letting in River Court and is very good news for the Dundee office market”.
